In the end, only one defendant paid for the death of the three workers of “Crotonscavi Costruzioni Generali” – Giuseppe Greco (51 years old), Mario De Meco (56), both from Isola Capo Rizzuto, and the 35-year-old Romanian Petru Dragos Chiriac – who lost their lives on 5 April 2018 when a retaining wall overturned while they were working on the construction site for the expansion of the seafront in Viale Magna Grecia, in Crotone. This was decided yesterday by the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro, which partially overturned the ruling of the Court of Crotone of 27 November 2023.
The panel chaired by Antonio Giglio only confirmed the 4-year prison sentence for Sergio Dinale, the designer and safety coordinator of the construction site. Then, he acquitted the other two accused: Giuseppe Spina, the technical director of the interventions who had been sentenced to 3 years in the first instance; and Gennaro Cosentino, the legal representative of “Crotonscavi”, the contractor for the works on behalf of the Municipality of Crotone, who had been sentenced to 4 years.
