We will return to dig in Tripi in the Piano Contrada, where the vestiges of the ancient city of Abakainon have been brought to light during the latest campaigns. The Regional Department of Cultural Heritage has engaged 50,000 euros for the expansion of the site, on the basis of the expert report prepared by the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Messina which will take care of the contract for the works.
The new area of intervention will concern the northern side of the Stoà, the large monumental structure of the Hellenistic-Roman age that identifies the plan of the plan with the agora-roro of Abacena. During the last campaign that ended at the beginning of 2024, the southern side had been brought to light. The reconstructions carried out by the archaeologist Maria Ravesi and the architect Rocco Burgio, indicate that the north side is to be identified with the ancient medieval church of San Giovanni, built by reusing the folding blocks from the monument.
