Political-judicial earthquake in Tropea. The Court of Vibo Valentia declared the mayor Giovanni Macrì ineligible for candidacy. The ruling comes as a direct consequence of the dissolution of the municipality’s elective bodies, decreed in April 2024 due to suspected mafia infiltration.
The mayor himself made the announcement through a public message addressed to citizens, speaking in the name of the commitments of “clarity and transparency” undertaken with the voters.
The appeal and the issue regarding the council
Mayor Macrì announced his intention to appeal the judges’ decision, highlighting a disparity in judgment within the same measure:
“Institutional respect requires me not to comment on the sentence which will be the subject of an appeal” declared Macrì, underlining how “the request was accepted only for me and not also for the councilor Greta Trecate, as the plaintiff’s request has already been partially undermined”.
Guaranteed administrative continuity
Despite the political weight of the sentence, the mayor wanted to send a message of stability to the citizens, excluding immediate repercussions on the maintenance of the municipality. The activity of the Municipality of Tropea, Macrì assured, continues with absolute regularity and dedication in the exclusive interest of the community.
The clarification in the city council
The case will soon move from social media to institutional offices. In fact, the mayor concluded by announcing that he will provide further detailed updates both on the judicial matter and on the numerous programmatic points and commitments of the organisation, at the next meeting of the city council.
