Two alleged smugglers of Iraqi nationality have undergone detention from the Crotone police headquarters and the financiers of the Crotone Naval Operations Section. The two are held responsible for the landing that took place on June 24th last when, escorted by the Port Authority they arrived at the port of Crotone 61 migrants.
These, rescued by health personnel, were immediately conducted by the Police Headquarters in the Regional Hub of Isola Capo Rizzuto for identification activities. The investigation, conducted by staff of the mobile team and by the financiers naval operational section with the coordination of the Public Prosecutor’s Office led by Domenico Guarascio, for the identification of the subjects responsible for the transfers from Turkey to the Calabrian coasts, aimed both to reconstruct the phases of the process used by the smugglers in foreign territory, and the methods of crossing and landing in the Italian coasts.
The testimonies of some migrants have proved to be fundamental who provided important elements to get to the identity of the smugglers, who had conducted the boat during the journey from Türkiye. The first data collected were then confirmed, according to the accusation, by the results of the analysis of the cell phones of the two suspects from which further clues emerged about their role as conductors of the boat, given that on both cell phones there were applications for navigation and nautical maps.
