The student election round of the University of Calabria for the renewal of representation in the academic bodies for the two-year period 2026-2028 ended with wide participation. The votes, which took place between last Tuesday and Wednesday, involved the entire representation system of the university: from the Board of Directors to the Academic Senate, passing through the Evaluation Unit, the University Sports Committee, the Department Councils, the Joint Teacher-Student Commissions, the Study Course Councils, up to the Doctoral Colleges and the Technical-Scientific Committees of the Libraries.
The official results will still have to be ratified in accordance with the university electoral regulations, but clear political data are already emerging from the counting operations, with a clear affirmation of the “Nova” list, which was the most voted in various strategic bodies of the University of Calabria. For the Board of Directors, one of the most important bodies in the governance of the university, “Nova” wins the seat with Nicola Ciconte, who obtains 3103 preferences, making him among the most voted candidates of the entire consultation. The same list also prevails in the Academic Senate, where Michele Di Puppo with 646 votes, Ferdinando Fazio with 947 preferences and Alessandro Mamone with 2998 votes are elected, which confirms a particularly broad consensus around Mamone’s candidacy. Good result also for the “Prospettiva” list, which managed to establish itself in the main academic bodies by electing Enrico Lia to the Board of Directors with 1710 votes and Teresa Benedetta Scerbo to the Academic Senate with 1592 preferences. A result that consolidates the presence of the list within university institutions and confirms a strong rooting especially among students of the humanities and social departments. In the University Sports Committee, however, a double comes for “Nova”, which elects Marco Betrò and Giuseppe Cristaldi, further strengthening the weight of the list also in the bodies dedicated to the sporting and associative life of the campus. Also in the area near “Nova”, Nicola Motta is elected to the Evaluation Unit, the central body for monitoring the quality of teaching, research and university services. However, the “Athena-RèF” list remains outside the main bodies and is unable to obtain representatives either in the Academic Senate or in the Board of Directors. A result that marks a setback for the university group, despite its participation in the electoral competition. The procedures for announcing those elected will now follow the provisions of article 27 of the university electoral regulations. After the allocation of seats to the individual lists, the president of the polling station will proceed to draw up the rankings on the basis of the individual figures obtained by the candidates. In the event of a tie, the criterion of minor age will be decisive. The electoral round therefore confirms the centrality of student representation in the democratic life of Unical. The new elected figures will be called upon over the next two years to deal with crucial issues for the future of the university: right to education, services, transport, university residences, quality of teaching.
