Jasmine Paolini beats Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu in a comeback with a score of 7-6(5), 2-6, 4-6 in the first round of the US Open. The Italian tennis player, number 5 in the ranking, fresh from winning the gold medal at the Paris Games in doubles together with Sara Errani, will have to face Karolina Pliskova in the second round.
Flavio Cobolli reaches the second round of the US Open for the first time in his career after beating Australian James Duckworth with a score of 6-1,4-6,6-4,6-4. The Florentine tennis player, number 31 in the ATP ranking, won in half an hour in a one-sided first set, suffered the opponent’s comeback in the second set of the game, then found continuity in service and in exchanges, taking home the third and fourth sets. In the second round Cobolli will face the winner between Zizou Bergs and Pavel Kotov.
Mattia Bellucci also did well: The 23-year-old beat Stanislav Wawrinka (winner of the 2016 US Open) in three sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.
Evans Khachanov Show: The Longest Match Ever at Flushing Meadows
British tennis player Daniel Evans (number 184 in the ATP ranking) defeated Russian Karen Khachanov (number 22) in the first round of the US Open after a match that lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes: it is the longest match ever played in the New York Grand Slam tournament. The previous record was set by Stefan Edberg and Michael Chang, who in the semifinals in 1992 remained on the court for 5 hours and 26 minutes.
Evans recovered from a 0-4 deficit in the deciding set to win 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. Khachanov took a 4-0 lead in the fifth set and earned four break points on Evans’ serve, but was unable to get within a single game of victory. The crowd on Court 6 urged Evans to get back into the match and greeted the final point with a roar. Evans will now face Argentine tennis player Mariano Navone in the second round.
