A less ‘hot’ winter in terms of gas bills, thanks to the effects of the drop in prices on international markets and generalized reductions in tariffs also on the free energy market.

This is explained by Assium, the Italian association of Utility Managers, which also reminds us that from 1st December the heating activation calendar in Italy will be completed, with the municipalities of climate zones A and B, including Agrigento, Catania, Crotone, Messina, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Syracuse, Trapani, Lampedusa, Porto Empedocle and Linosa, which will be able to start the radiators from Monday.

“By examining the best commercial proposals of energy companies for the month of December and published on the specific portal managed by Arera and Acquirente Unico, we discover that compared to the best offers of last winter, families can obtain significant savings in their bills – explains Assium. For fixed price contracts the average bill in the main cities stands, considering the best available offer, at around 1,528 euros per year (for a family with consumption of 1,400 cubic metres), against 1,765 euros last winter, with a saving of 13.4% equal to a lower expense of 237 euros per household.

Things are even better for variable price offers: here the average bill on the free market is around 1,498 euros, -19.1% compared to last winter (when the average bill with the best offers on the variable price and in the same cities monitored was 1,852 euros), equal to a saving of almost 354 euros per year per user”. At the basis of this situation is the drop in gas prices on international markets – analyzes the association of utility managers – “In the last few days on the Ttf of Amsterdam the gas has fallen below €30/MWh, recording a -25% compared to the average prices of November 2024, while on the Psv the cut is even greater and reaches -32.8%, going from €0.482/Smc in November 2024 to 0.324 €/Smc in November 2025”.

“All the data tells us that this could be the first winter without high bills, with tariffs which, despite the increase in consumption, continue to fall and gas prices far from the records reached in previous years – explains the president of Assium, Federico Bevilacqua – An advantage which, however, risks remaining only on paper and not bringing any concrete benefit to families: on the bill front, Italians still continue to make anti-economic choices, not changing supplier despite the presence of more convenient offers on the market, or changing manager without however know the commercial proposals in detail, thus ending up signing disadvantageous contracts.

In view of the increased gas consumption linked to the winter period and considering the offers on the market which can lead to significant savings on the bill, it is essential at this time to evaluate whether the conditions of your supply are in line with market prices, attempt to renegotiate them with your supplier, or evaluate a possible change of manager, relying for these operations only on qualified personnel such as a utility manager capable of verifying the real convenience of a commercial offer and helping consumers to make the best choices”, concludes Bevilacqua.
