A violent water bomb hit this afternoon around 3 pm on the Tyrrhenian town, causing serious inconvenience in a few minutes. “In half an hour the end of the world”, say some residents of the country’s lower area, between the railway station and the Lungomare Bagche Grosse, where the port site is located.

The strong rainfall transformed some roads into rivers, compromising urban roads and railway infrastructure.

Suspended trains and suspended railway circulation

Due to the damage caused by bad weather, the circulation on the Palermo-Messina line was suspended at 15:10 at the height of Santo Stefano di Camastra. The stop, still underway at 18:30, is causing heavy repercussions on railway mobility in Sicily.

Trenitalia has communicated that the Intercity and regional trains will be able to undergo delays, cancellations or limitations of the path. Here is the updated situation: Intercity 723 Roma Termini (7:26) – Palermo Centrale (19:02): the race in Messina Centrale ends. Intercity 1964 Palermo Centrale (12:58) – Messina Centrale (16:20): definitively stops in Santo Stefano di Camastra. Intercity 1965 Messina Centrale (13:25) – Palermo Centrale (16:55): the race to Caronia ends. Intercity 1954 Palermo Centrale (17:20) – Messina Centrale (20:41): canceled.

Local authorities are working to restore normal conditions. In addition to the inconvenience to railway circulation, flooding and damage to vehicles are reported. Bad weather does not seem to give respite and the worsening of weather conditions in the next few hours could further aggravate the situation.
