The Carabinieri of Gioiosa Ionica, with the support of the Helicopter Squadron “Cacciatori Calabria”, discovered a large quantity of narcotic substances hidden underground in the countryside of the Ionian municipality. The operation, which began during the summer, led to the seizure of more 30 kilograms of hashish and more than one and a half kilos of cocaine, found inside plastic drums carefully buried among the vegetation.
The discovery was possible thanks to investigations carried out in July, when the military, suspicious of some movements in the rural area, started a series of targeted checks. The traces found on the ground led the Carabinieri to identify the exact point where the drug cache had been buried.
The subsequent investigative activities, coordinated by Public Prosecutor’s Office of Locri, directed by Giuseppe Casciaro, have made it possible to gather serious evidence against a 28 year old from Gioiosa Ionica, arrested in execution of a precautionary custody order in prison.
The operation is part of the broader framework of anti-drug trafficking activities in Locride. In the last two months, in fact, the Carabinieri of Roccella Ionica, Caulonia, Riace and Mammola have identified and destroyed five cannabis plantations, for a total of more than 2000 plants stolen from the illegal market.
