The Traffic Police makes public the road sections where speed control instruments are operational day by day. A way to invite motorists to moderate their speed while respecting the limits and thus prevent road accidents.
The services will be carried out from Monday 27 October 2025 until Sunday 02 November 2025, on the A/18 Messina-Catania and A/20 Messina-Palermo motorway sections, in the sections most affected by a high accident rate, according to the following calendar: Days 27, 28 and 31 October 2025 on the A/20 Messina – Palermo and A/18 Messina – Catania, alternatively, in both directions.
Let’s remember the current limits:
• on motorways: 130 kilometers per hour, dropping to 110 in case of bad weather;
• on main extra-urban roads: 110 kilometers per hour, dropping to 90 in this case
of bad weather.
The sanctions in summary:
• up to 10 km/h more than the limit – fine between 42 and 173
euro
• over 10 km/h and up to 40 km/h more – fine of between 346 and
1388 euros and 3 points deduction on the driving licence;
• over 40 km/h and no more than 60 km/h – fine between 543 and 2,170 euros,
deduction of 6 points on the driving license and additional sanction of suspension of the
driving license for one to three months
• anyone who exceeds the maximum speed limit by more than 60 km/h is punished with a fine
fine including 845 and 3,382, with a deduction of 10 points on the
license and the additional sanction of license suspension from six to twelve
months. In case of repeat offenses within a two-year period, the driving license will be revoked.
These penalties are increased for new drivers and professional drivers.
Particular attention will also be paid to excessive speeding committed by drivers
of commercial and passenger transport vehicles (buses and heavy vehicles) also through
the reading provided by on-board systems such as tachographs and digital tachographs.
