Sofia Goggia triumphs for the first time in the Pyrenees and wins the second World Cup super-G in Soldeu, Andorra. The champion from Bergamo signs victory number 28 of her career by imposing herself on the “Aligà” track with a time of 1’25”95, at the end of an impeccable test especially in the central section, the most technical of the track.
Starting with bib number 11, the Italian preceded the German Emma Aicher, winner of the first super-G of the weekend, by 24 hundredths, and the Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, who was initially second and then slipped to third place, by 31 cents. For Goggia it is the sixth podium of the season in the Cup, seventh also considering the bronze won in the downhill at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games.
Big success also for the rankings
The Fiamme Gialle representative made the difference in setting the curves and absorbing the numerous bumps, thus completing her “round the world” of victories: after the first successes in South Korea in 2017, the Italian had already triumphed on the alpine slopes of France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, as well as in North America and Scandinavia.
Good fifth place for Laura Pirovano, 77 hundredths of a second from the winner and 46 from the podium. Eighth place was Federica Brignone, who paid the price at the top of the track, finishing 1″43 behind her compatriot. Fifteenth place was Elena Curtoni at 2″15.
World Cup and next stages
With Soldeu’s success, Goggia rises to 68 overall podiums in the Cup and consolidates her lead in the super-G ranking with 420 points, 84 more than New Zealand’s Alice Robinson. Aicher is third at 116 points. The top positions in the general classification remain unchanged, led by the American Mikaela Shiffrin ahead of the Swiss Camille Rast.
The women’s circuit now returns to Italy for the three days in Val di Fassa: the recovery downhill in Crans-Montana on Friday, the scheduled downhill on Saturday and a new super-G on Sunday.
