War material at the port of Gioia Tauro? The unions are calling for checks

«The MSC Siena ship, coming from Spain, which is said to be carrying three containers of war material, is expected in the port of Gioia Tauro. We strongly ask – say the Orsa and Usb unions – that Customs and the Financial Police carry out the necessary checks on arriving containers. The competent bodies are already aware of the identification numbers of the containers: carrying out the checks would take little time and would allow full clarity on what is happening. All over the world, logistics and port workers are raising the issue of their responsibility in the chain of war. We ask the port workers of Gioia Tauro not to become complicit in the war chain and to claim the right not to collaborate with operations that fuel wars, destruction and massacres. In many ports around the world, workers have already chosen not to handle cargoes destined for armed conflicts when there are well-founded doubts about the nature of the goods. For this reason we ask that arriving containers are not moved until the required checks have been carried out. At the same time it is necessary to say it clearly: responsibility cannot be passed onto workers. We need a collective effort from civil society, associations, movements, social and democratic realities and above all local institutions to demand transparency and respect for the laws. To discuss this situation and coordinate the initiatives to be undertaken – conclude Orsa and Usb – we invite everyone to participate in a public meeting which will be held this afternoon at 6 pm in the Casa del Popolo “Giuseppe Valarioti” in Rosarno”.
