Video surveillance in Calabria, the point on POC funds Legality: the beneficiary municipalities and the sums allocated

An institutional meeting took place this morning dedicated to the state of implementation of the urban video surveillance projects financed through the Complementary Operational Program (POC) Legality 2014–2020.
Undersecretary of the Interior Wanda Ferro also took part in the table, promoted by the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior.

Present were the representatives of the Department, the delegates of the Prefectures of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia, together with the mayors of the 12 Calabrian municipalities benefiting from the funding and the heads of the technical offices.

Security and technology: the strategy

The initiative is part of the integrated security policies promoted by the Government, with the aim of strengthening territorial control through:

– technological innovation
– coordination between institutions
– direct involvement of local authorities

«The financed interventions – declared Undersecretary Ferro – fall fully within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Catanzaro on 23 September 2024, strengthening safety, legality and social cohesion».

The municipalities involved

The mayors of the following municipalities participated in the meeting:
Catanzaro, Lamezia Terme, Vibo Valentia, Serra San Bruno, Altomonte, Belvedere Marittimo, Cetraro, Paola, Rogliano, San Giovanni in Fiore, Trebisacce and Ardore.

Local authorities play a central role as implementers of the interventions, with the support of the Prefectures for territorial coordination.

The status of the projects

The comparison represented an operational moment for:

verify the progress of the projects
identify critical issues
define shared solutions

Particular attention was paid to the reporting of expenses and the correct use of public resources, with technical indications to guarantee transparency, efficiency and traceability.

The total financing amounts to €2,960,244.75.

Further resources from the Region

As part of the same protocol, the Calabria Region has allocated further funds amounting to approximately €1,350,000.00 for other municipalities in the Reggio and Crotone areas.

Objectives: prevention and control of the territory

During the meeting, the strategic function of video surveillance systems was reiterated for:

support the action of the Police Force
prevent predatory crimes
combat drug dealing
reduce urban decay

A synergy to be strengthened

The summit represented a key step to relaunch activities and consolidate collaboration between central administration, Prefectures and Municipalities.

Security, it was reiterated, remains a primary public good to be protected through modern, coordinated and effective tools, with technology increasingly at the service of the territories and the quality of life of citizens.
