The attack against the outgoing council is signed by a senator (the Northern League member Nino Germanà), by a deputy and regional councilor (Elvira Amata of FdI) and by a municipal councilor (Cosimo Oteri). The reply from former mayor Federico Basile was immediate.
«The recent resignation of the Basile Council leaves behind a bitter legacy for the citizens of Messina – thus begins the attack of the exponents of the Centre-Right -. In a final act of pure power management, the outgoing Administration has chosen to give absolute priority to the armoring of seats, appointing the sole directors of the investee companies, but has culpably ignored the approval of the Regulation for Scrapping-quinquies 2026. It is unacceptable that a Council, before resigning, did not feel the institutional duty to dismiss a measure of vital importance for the economy of Messina families. The Scrapping-quinquies represents a lifeline that would allow debts relating to local taxes (Imu, Tari, administrative sanctions) to be regularized by reducing interest and penalties. It was preferred to close the issue of appointments in investee companies rather than open the issue of facilitated collection”. According to Germanà, Amata and Oteri, «without this act, the people of Messina will lose the possibility of submitting the application by the strict deadline of 30 April 2026. A window that would have guaranteed the immediate suspension of enforcement actions (foreclosures and administrative arrests) and access to a subsidized installment plan of up to 54 bimonthly instalments, with a net saving that can exceed 30% of the total debt thanks to the reduction of penalties and interest brunette. Resignation cannot be an alibi for inefficiency. We are now asking the extraordinary commissioner for emergency intervention to remedy this serious omission before the April 30 deadline.”
