The “engine” behind the aggressiveness of tumors has been identified: so now they can be stopped sooner. In fact, tumors can remain clinically silent for years and accelerate when the DNA repair systems are compromised. A study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, by the Tumor Institute of Naples, in collaboration with the Vanvitelli University, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome, the University of Messina and the University of Salerno, rewrites the evolution of cancer and describes its “evolutionary cascade”: This model therefore opens up new strategies for early diagnosis and targeted interventions. According to Pascale’s oncologist, Alessandro Ottaiano, the first signature of the study «this theory does not change the treatments from tomorrow morning, but it shifts the target: not only destroying the tumor, but preventing it from accelerating. Understanding this step can make the difference. Because it means identifying when the tumor is about to change gear and intervening earlier, with more targeted therapies.”
