Nothing and no one will be able to return Anna Rita Biasi’s smile and energy to her loved ones. The 65-year-old, who tragically passed away at the Annunziata hospital in Cosenza after a series of vicissitudes and suffering, continues to “fight” through her children, Bruno and Francesco De Filippis. It is impossible to metabolize the death of a mother (which occurred on December 22, 2024), even more so if it occurred in suspicious circumstances, but the pain can be soothed by getting rid of that sense of injustice that has pervaded them for months. The De Filippis brothers ask to know the truth. Because the 65-year-old from CastroLibera was a perfectly healthy woman before the situation worsened. It all started with a knee infiltration, a routine practice performed by an orthopedist, which then resulted in a serious infection. From then on, the collapse. The woman was transferred to Cosenza hospital and her ordeal began. The children are looking for answers and have relied on the Milanese law firm Unistudio&Gambino Legal and taxwhich has a department specialized in the study and analysis of medical professional liability cases. They want to see clearly. Even more so since, a few months after the woman’s disappearance, her husband Mariano, destroyed by grief, for whom Mrs. Annarita was a caregiver, also died.
A family torn apart. To the pain following the premature death, there was also a state of profound disappointment, as the children had attempted mediation precisely to avoid the court, waiting several months for the healthcare facility to examine the case. An attempt that fell on deaf ears, in July there will be the first hearing of the trial which will be celebrated in Cosenza. «My brother and I carry enormous pain within us. It is not just the lack of our mother, but above all the way in which we lost her that leaves a profound mark. After her death, our father, who depended on her for everything, also passed away: in a few months our family was dismantled”, says Bruno De Filippis. «We only ask that the responsibilities of those who made mistakes be ascertained: from the orthopedist to the hospital. There was a chain of errors and omissions.”
The nightmare began after an infiltration
The 65-year-old’s son then recalls the nightmare. «It all started with an infiltration carried out without the right precautions. Then there was the failure to diagnose the infection, an inexplicable delay in the surgery and the disastrous management in hospital. I ask the institutions to ensure that patient safety is a real priority, not just on paper. It means that real controls must be implemented on the application of prevention protocols, intervention times and infection management; it means continuous staff training, coordination and efficient communication between departments; it means the introduction of concrete corrective measures. I tell citizens not to be afraid to ask for explanations, to demand clarity on treatments. If something doesn’t convince you, don’t give up. Our fight is also for you, for all the users of the Cosenza local health authority, so that no one will ever have to experience a tragedy like ours again. Calabrian healthcare has some excellence within it and we don’t want to accept that a few can damage it and encourage journeys of hope to the north.” Bruno and Francesco De Filippis only ask for clarity. We cannot accept the premature death of a premature mother like this, without getting answers.
