Hormuz once again becomes the epicenter of a global crisis that threatens to lead to open conflict. This morning, US President Donald Trump urgently called a meeting in the White House Situation Room to discuss new developments in the area.
According to what was reported by the Axios portal, which quotes two senior American officials, the situation is extremely fluid and dangerous. One of the officials warned that, in the absence of an immediate diplomatic or tactical breakthrough, “the war could resume in the coming days.” The tension in the Middle East seems to have reached the point of no return, alarming international chancelleries.
While Washington is preparing for war scenarios, an opposite message arrives from the papal flight taking Pope Leo from Yaoundé to Luanda. Dialoguing with journalists on board the plane, the Pontiff wanted to nip in the bud attempts to fuel a direct controversy with the American leader. “It is not in my interest to debate Donald Trump,” Leone declared firmly. The Pope was keen to point out that his recent interventions in Africa, focused on peace and solidarity, are not a reaction to the latest moves or comments from the White House: «The speeches I am giving were prepared in some cases even two weeks ago, well before the President of the United States commented on me. Yet, it was interpreted as if I was looking for a debate, which I’m not interested in at all.”
