An immense Filippo Ganna wins the tenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2026. The “Verbania locomotive” dominates the 42 km time trial from Viareggio to Massa with a monstrous time of 45’53”, equaling Eddy Merckx with 7 victories in the time trials at the Corsa Rosa, while Francesco Moser continues to lead this special ranking with 12 victories. And for Ganna it is the fortieth success as a professional, 8 of which in the Giro. The pink jersey remains on the shoulders of the Portuguese Afonso Eulálio who loses a couple of minutes to Vingegaard, who appeared rather subdued, managing to maintain the lead of the general classification by just 27″. Before the tricolor arrow landed in Massa, only two other riders appeared in first place in the provisional classification, the German Max Walscheid and the Dutch Sjoerd Bax. Ganna’s super performance, however, sweeps both away, with the arrival of the Piedmontese ending any discussion for the stage victory. Completing the podium were the Dutch Thymen Arensman, Ganna’s teammate, second at 1’54” and the French Rémi Cavagna, third at 1’59”. The real challenge of the Giro, however, is between the men who aspire to the pink jersey, in a stage that partially changes the face of the general classification. The Portuguese Eulalio, despite not being a specialist in time trials, defends his record by 27″. In second position is still the Danish Vingegaard, while Arensman takes the third step of the provisional podium, now at 1’57».
Among the best was Canadian Derek Gee, who finished 2’06” behind Ganna and entered the top ten overall. Felix Gall does badly, arriving at 4’22” and in the general classification he is now 1’57” behind Vingegaard. At home, Giulio Pellizzari defends himself, who seems to have recovered after the crisis in last Sunday’s stage with arrival in Corno alle Scale. The Marche native pays just 18″ from Vingegaard. Meanwhile, the triumph in the time trial does not dampen Ganna’s desire to obtain at least one more success, perhaps in next Friday’s stage, right at his home, Verbania.
«From today another Giro begins for me and I hope to get another victory. Of course if it were Friday it would be a dream. We went really well – admits the Italian – even Arensman, like at Tirreno. I am really satisfied. We did a crazy job this winter, especially with the men in the rankings. Truly a super job by the whole team. Let’s hope we can relax this evening, enjoy this victory and then we’ll get back to this Giro.” Ganna really impressed in the race against the clock: “We still have a few tricks up our sleeve for the subsequent time trials. Especially regarding the position to keep on the bike, but it was difficult to take her to the Giro because there wasn’t time to prepare her as best as possible. Maybe we’ll evaluate later at the end of the season.” A perfect route for the Italian champion: “I really liked the route – he concludes – I’m really happy to have found a time trial perfectly suited to my characteristics. It wasn’t easy to stay focused and in position for forty-five minutes. It was really an intense day”
