They had been left at the bottom of an impervious slope, hidden by thick vegetation, destined for certain death. Five mixed-breed dog puppies were saved at the last minute by the forestry carabinieri of the Aspromonte National Park Department, in the “Ponte Secco” area, in the municipal area of San Giorgio Morgeto.

The operation began immediately after a citizen’s report. The soldiers of the San Giorgio Morgeto “Park” Unit, having activated the competent Veterinary Service, reached the indicated area, finding themselves faced with a particularly complex operational scenario. The five little dogs were in fact in a partially inaccessible area, trapped among the brambles at the bottom of the cliff.

Only the timeliness and technical preparation of the forestry carabinieri made it possible to reach the bottom of the ravine, recover the cubs one by one and secure them, saving them from an inevitable end due to hunger and the dangers of wildlife.

Once rescued, the little ones were subjected to an initial visit and entrusted to the specialized staff of a facility affiliated with the Municipality, who will take care of health care, custody and future adoption procedures.

The episode once again turns the spotlight on the phenomenon of abandonment of pets, especially in mountainous and rural areas. The intervention of the Aspromonte National Park Department confirms how the Army’s activity in the area goes well beyond the fundamental protection of the forest heritage and the fight against environmental crimes, declining on a daily basis in the protection and respect of every form of life within the protected area.
