Among the big themes of the Serie D season that has just ended is the “almost” miracle of Messina. From -14 at the start, thanks to a great first round, until the collapse in the second leg culminating in relegation. An outcome achieved in the playouts (with a draw) for a passage to Eccellenza which hurts the hearts of a fan who had hoped for the sensational comeback by Pippo Romano and Giovanni Martello. Yes, because in the Giallorossi season there is a before and an after. And Martello himself, sporting director of Messina from August to December, is the former much applauded by fans and professionals. Many victories, few goals conceded, essential and effective football albeit with a reduced squad. In the winter transfer window the break with the new club and bitter farewells. In his words, a photograph of what happened in those delicate months.
A sensational feat was being accomplished. Then what happened?
«I think there is very little to comment on. We built a team on August 30th with a handicap of fourteen points in the standings. We scored 29 points on the field, with just 11 goals conceded and three defeats in the first half of the season. Data in hand, the best defense of the tournament. A masterpiece, without a doubt. Then the new Australian owners arrived and wanted people they trusted in the management at all costs. Figures who were supposed to direct me. Honestly, after an 18-year career with 15 consecutive Serie D titles, I preferred to remove the trouble. My dignity is not for sale. The Messina tale got the whole of Italy talking. Something beautiful became a sporting tragedy and culminated in relegation. I don’t think there is anything else to add.”
What was the championship overall?
«A tournament that was certainly balanced and uncertain until the last day. A path in which each team could win or lose against any opponent, outside of the predictions on the eve. The fans and the spectacular nature of a championship that was finally open and fought were the ones who benefited. It must be said that the absence of big lapsed helped. In the recent past, places like Palermo, Bari and Catania have reduced the potential of the fourth series.”
Many big names ready to start again in the future Serie D. Syracuse, Reggina, Trapani. What are the forecasts?
«It will certainly be a tough championship. But the initial balances and relations of power will be understood later, starting from the real investments decided by the companies.”
