Marios Oikonomou didn’t make it. The former Greek defender passed away at the age of 33, hospitalized in extremely critical conditions since May 23rd after the car accident in which he was involved in the Ioannina area. In Italy with the shirts of Cagliari, Bologna, Spal, Bari and Sampdoria and retiring in 2024, Oikonomou was in the intensive care unit of the Ioannina hospital with a serious cranio-encephalic trauma and had undergone two craniectomies to decompress the edema and the brain. According to the Greek media, the procedure for awakening from the induced coma had been started in recent days but without success.
The news of his passing was given by Pas Giannina, where he grew up until making his debut as a professional. «Marios Oikonomou, a boy who won the affection and respect of all of us, left us prematurely. His memory will remain alive in all of us”, the club’s condolences.
