On Monday 8 June, in Messina, the delivery of new housing to 13 families from the Taormina district assigned as part of the rehabilitation process of the shantytown in the city of the Strait.

At 9.30 am at Palazzo Zanca the keys will be handed over to the tenants in the presence of the regional councilor for Tourism Elvira Amata, the sub-commissioner for sanitation Santi Trovato, the mayor of Messina Federico Basile and the sole director of ArisMe Fabrizio Gemelli. In the afternoon, the delivery of the reclaimed area of Fondo Saccà where the new ecological apartments will be built is scheduled. «We are giving concrete answers to the families coming from the slums of Messina thanks to the redevelopment of the area which continues to bring concrete results quickly.

In less than a year in the Taormina district, which is the second largest slum, over one hundred shacks have been demolished – says the president of the Region Renato Schifani, head of the Commissioner’s Structure for the rehabilitation of Messina -. The 13 families in the Taormina district, who have been able to choose apartments in recent weeks, will finally set foot in the new accommodation and begin a new life cycle.”

The transfer of the families to the new homes will allow the start of demolition in the lot adjacent to the already reclaimed Via Ennio Quinto, thus expanding the strategic part of the territory for mobility between the southern area and the centre. The speeding up of times was achieved thanks to the division into lots and sub-lots arranged by sub-commissioner Trovato which made it possible to proceed in a homogeneous manner in the various areas of rehabilitation. «Another important milestone», states the Region, is the delivery scheduled for Monday 8 June at 3.30 pm of the reclaimed areas of Fondo Saccà by the commissioner structure to the Municipality of Messina and to Invitalia (for the parts of their respective competence) for the construction of an ecological condominium as part of the Capacity project. In Fondo Saccà the commissioner’s structure together with the implementing body Invitalia will create 32 of the 40 total homes planned in the area where 67 families lived in shacks, who were moved to new homes in recent years. The Cericola company reclaimed the Fondo Saccà area.
