The “Together for Tropea” council group expresses deep concern and strong disquiet about the legal matter that led to the declaration of ineligibility, in the first instance, of the current mayor of Tropea, Giovanni Macrì. This is an extremely important political and institutional fact which cannot be classified as a simple clash between the majority and the opposition, nor minimized through circumstantial declarations or attempts to shift attention to the alleged responsibilities of the opposition in the council. On the contrary, it requires a serious reflection on the present and future of our community, with two questions, before any other, which deserve a clear answer: why did Mayor Macrì choose to run and lead the city again despite being aware of the existence of a procedure that could have led to such a ruling? Why expose Tropea to the concrete risk of a new phase of administrative and institutional instability?

Today our city once again finds itself at the center of national media attention. An exhibition that was not created for its extraordinary tourist, cultural and landscape merits, but for events that once again risk compromising the image and credibility of its institutions. Tropea still bears the scars of events that have profoundly marked its recent history: the commissionership following the dissolution of the city council due to mafia infiltration, the controversies and events that have affected the management of the city cemetery and other situations that have contributed to fueling, within and outside the local borders, a negative perception of the city. Today, unfortunately, a new shadow is gathering again on the sky of Tropea. It is inevitable to ask what administrative planning can really be guaranteed in a context characterized by such evident uncertainty. What investments, what strategic projects and what long-term vision can be pursued when institutional stability appears constantly exposed to possible judicial and administrative developments?

The concern does not only concern the political level: it concerns above all the reputational damage that risks affecting the entire community. In a time in which the credibility of institutions represents a decisive element for attracting investments, opportunities and public resources, any element of instability can generate doubts, slowdowns and difficulties in relations with superordinate bodies, financing bodies and subjects called to evaluate the administrative capacity of local authorities. Anyone who today tries to minimize these facts or transform an institutional issue into a battle between political supporters does the city a service. Loving Tropea means demanding transparency, legality, responsibility and clarity. It means having the courage to look at reality for what it is, even when this reality is uncomfortable. Tropea did not deserve to be exposed again to the risk of a season of administrative instability. He did not deserve to once again see his name associated with events that end up obscuring his immense potential and the sacrifices made by the healthy, hard-working and honest part of the community. The political responsibility for this situation cannot be placed on others. It certainly does not fall on those who had proposed to citizens a credible, serious alternative free from any element of uncertainty.

However, it falls solely and exclusively on those who, despite knowing the weight of the pending issues, still chose to place the city in front of a risk that has materialized today. Citizens’ trust cannot be defended with slogans, symbols or celebratory statements. It defends itself through behavior characterized by maximum institutional correctness and with a full assumption of political responsibility before the administered community. For these reasons we believe that the mayor must make a deep reflection on his role and the consequences that this affair is having on the city. An authentic sense of institutions would today require a gesture of responsibility that restores serenity, authority and credibility to public life in Tropea. As the opposition we will continue to carry out our role with firmness, balance and respect for the institutions, monitoring every administrative act and demanding the transparency that citizens deserve. Tropea is bigger than any administration, than any majority and than any personal ambition. Out of respect for this city and its future we cannot allow what is not normal to be normalized. Citizens have the right to receive clear answers, to have credible institutions and administrative guidance capable of restoring stability, authority and trust. This is the moment for responsibility, not for the fans. Just as this is not the time for justifications or controversies. This is the time to think, first of all, about the problems of the city, its progress and its residents: because we are and will always be Together for Tropea.
