The look into the future. The University of Arcavacata is the protagonist of a global initiative with huge investments. We talked about it with Professor Francesco Valentini, director of the Physics Department.
Director, Unical is involved in a large international project: what does this mean?
«It means that the University of Calabria is not simply a supporting partner, but literally sits on the “command bridge” of one of the most ambitious robotic space missions of the next twenty years. The National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), which coordinates the entire project, and our university, in fact, represent Italy in the Science Study Team of the European Space Agency (ESA), a scientific team made up of 9 male and female scientists across Europe, which has the task of guiding all phases of development of the “Plasma Observatory” mission, up to launch. It is the formal recognition that research activities in the field of Space Physics, Astrophysics and Plasma Physics represent a consolidated and globally recognized reality. For the next twenty years, therefore, Calabria will in all respects be one of the European capitals of space exploration.”
