Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, during which the two leaders addressed bilateral relations, the main regional issues and developments on the international scene. This was announced by the Communications Directorate of the Turkish Presidency.

During the conversation, Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Italy in all sectors, with particular attention to the defense industry, we read in a note released by the Directorate of Communications on platform X. The Turkish president also underlined the importance of adopting new initiatives to further consolidate relations between Ankara and Rome. Erdogan then expressed the hope that the summit of NATO leaders, scheduled for next week, will contribute to strengthening unity among the Allies. Meloni is expected to participate in the summit, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, during which the Alliance countries will discuss security, defense and military spending. During the meeting, the Turkish president therefore reiterated Ankara’s desire to intensify cooperation with Italy, particularly in the defense sector. According to the Directorate of Communications, the two leaders also examined various regional and international dossiers.

The conversation between Meloni and Erdogan also allowed an exchange on the situation in Libya, including cooperation in combating irregular migratory movements and human trafficking.
