The Spanish government asks Italy to revoke by Sunday 9 August the border controls reintroduced on 1 August, after the migration crisis in Ceuta, and warns that, otherwise, it will adopt “proportional” response measures. In an official note, the Madrid executive defines the Italian decision as “unjust, contrary to the interests of the EU and discriminatory towards the Spanish population”, claiming that it was adopted “without notice, unilaterally and with spurious arguments that do not comply with either the Schengen Borders Code or the truth”.
