«A positive opinion, yes, but weighed down by over a hundred prescriptions and recommendations to be taken into account immediately, in the executive planning phase, the only one that can really open the first construction site of the bridge over the Strait».

La Repubblica writes this, giving an account of the content of the Public Works Council held in recent days. In particular, according to what the newspaper reports in its online edition, the council would ask for further clarifications on: new data and checks on the seismic front, partially confirming some alarms launched by the INGV experts two years ago. We read in the opinion: «The recordings relating to the event in Central Italy in 2016 characterized by a magnitude lower than that expressible by the Strait fault system, showed spectral ordinates higher than those of the project, in particular for the towers and anchoring blocks».

The question relating to the materials to be used

Further information is also requested on the materials to be used. In particular, it is recommended to “evaluate with particular attention whether the assumed execution classes require the use of steels with specific supply conditions aimed at improving behavior in the thickness direction” and to “evaluate the possible use of normalized steels in place of thermomechanical steels, where deemed appropriate in relation to the specific manufacturing, weldability and toughness conditions required by the project”. On the large columns of the Bridge “it appears necessary that the design of the test fields is developed in such a way as to adequately represent the entire geological and geotechnical variability of the areas involved, so that the results obtained can be considered truly representative of the operating conditions of the work”. Finally, for the Council, some of the Bridge documents are old: “It should in fact be underlined that a good part of the information available, and in some ways to be considered more significant for the purposes of reconstructing the geological framework, dates back to a few decades ago; it is therefore intrinsically based on operational technologies that are now largely outdated.

Ciucci: “The recommendations were already foreseen in the executive planning phase”

«The Stretto di Messina company does not yet have the final text of the positive opinion of the Superior Council of Public Works». Thus the CEO, Pietro Ciucci, to ANSA who explains: «Taking into account that we collaborated with great commitment to the Council’s verification activities, we can anticipate that the recommendations indicated by the CSLLPP were already foreseen in the executive planning phase, as well as the observations of the scientific committee, and as fully explained in the designer’s report».
