Five people were injured in a shooting involving multiple attackers that occurred in the middle of the night at Virginia State University, in the USA, causing the temporary lockdown of the campus. According to what was reported by the university, the events occurred around 1.30am on Saturday (7.30am in Italy) outside a university residence: both the campus police and the local law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter. Upon their arrival, officers found five people wounded by gunshot wounds, one of whom was in critical condition. The victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. University officials said “a significant law enforcement presence remains on campus” as the investigation continues.
It was not immediately clear whether any arrests had been made. Virginia State University, CBS News reported, is a university historically attended by African-American students, located in Ettrick, Virginia, about 24 miles south of the state capital, Richmond. The public university has approximately 5,700 students and was the first fully state-funded four-year college for African Americans. According to the university’s website, student residences opened a week ago and classes are scheduled to start on Monday. Many students had just completed the ‘New Trojans Experience’, an orientation program for new freshmen.
