The Ceuta case is not a “political speculation against Spain. This is not the logic that drives this government, whose sole objective is the protection of national security. This is why we are carefully monitoring the evolution of the situation and, as already announced by the government, the decision to suspend the application of the Schengen Agreement will not be reviewed before 15 August, and in any case only after security risks for Italy have been completely excluded.” Thus the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, during the hearing in the Schengen Commission.
“The suspension operated by Madrid corresponds to a retaliatory logic”
On the halt to Schengen with Spain, “what the government has chosen to do is fully within European law. Other European states have done it and continue to do it, even towards Italy. I am not aware that in those circumstances any doubts or requests for further information have been expressed.” So again the Minister of the Interior who adds: “While Italy’s initiative is based on solid objective foundations and the control activity, the suspension carried out by the Madrid authorities against us corresponds, by their admission, to a substantially retaliatory logic.”
