The countdown started on August 9th. And, without much fanfare, it is animating the strategies of the parties in this final part of the summer. Although the risk of sub-government appointments has been among the priorities on the center-right’s agenda for some time, for about ten days Renato Schifani has put it as the first point for the resumption of activity next week. And the reason is that the president is in a hurry to (re)appoint the head of the CTS, the technical-scientific commission called to give opinions on major projects, primarily those concerning the two waste-to-energy plants.
At the helm of the CTS, until 9 August, was Gaetano Armao, former councilor in the Lombardo and Musumeci governments, then Schifani’s challenger in 2022, and finally a key man in the president’s magic circle. To the point that Schifani would like to immediately renew his contract as soon as it expired, especially as the moment of the final yes to the waste-to-energy plants and various other mega investment projects in the green energy sector is approaching.
But Fratelli d’Italia is in less of a hurry. Once Armao’s mandate expired, the Environment Councilor Giusi Savarino entrusted the leadership of the commission to Chiara Tomasino, a university professor already employed by the same body and on whom the Meloniana relies heavily. Furthermore, the FdI commissioner, Luca Sbardella, sent a signal to Schifani: «The Cts worked very well, also thanks to the reforms initiated by the Musumeci government. We are not against Armao’s confirmation but everything must be discussed in an overall package regarding the appointments to be made.”
