“On the rehabilitation of Messina’s slums, even before talking about the resources to be integrated, precise commitments are needed from the national government: an adequate financial allocation and the extension of the special powers of the extraordinary commissioner until 2028”. “This morning I had a conversation with the president of the Sicilian Region and extraordinary commissioner, Renato Schifani, whom I thank for the attention and commitment he is dedicating to this matter. The president has already started discussions at the highest levels with the national government and is working to ensure, also through regional resources, the continuation of the recovery process started in 2021 with the Carfagna law”, he explains.
“Now it is necessary for the State to also fully play its part. The size of the intervention requires adequate resources and, above all, the continuity of the commissioner’s powers until the completion of the process. As far as I am concerned, even in my capacity as president of the bicameral Commission for insularity, I will support President Schifani’s initiative with conviction. We owe it to the thousands of people who still live in conditions of serious hardship today and to the many families who continue to live under asbestos roofing”, explains Calderone. “It is a challenge that concerns Messina, but which calls into question the responsibility of the State. This requires resources, powers and certain times. And I will continue to do my part in this.”
