The funeral of Egidio Blandina, the 29-year-old young man from Messina who died in recent days in a tragic motorbike accident at the Agrigento kart track, will take place tomorrow at 11am in the Cathedral of Messina.
The news of his death deeply affected the city. Egidio Blandina, management engineer, was also well known for his connection with one of the most famous entrepreneurial families of Messina: he was in fact the nephew of Ivo Blandina, president of the Chamber of Commerce and a leading figure in the Sicilian economic world.
He worked in the family business, Comet Srl, together with his father Danilo and uncle Ivo. Egidio attended the Maurolico classical high school and then obtained a degree in management engineering, logistics.
Those who knew him describe him as a cheerful young man, generous and deeply passionate about sports and motors. He was also an appreciated padel player and had a particular passion for motorbikes, following a family tradition.
The accident occurred at the Concordia circuit in Agrigento, where the 29-year-old was for a day of testing. According to initial reconstructions, Egidio suddenly lost control of the motorbike, crashing into a barrier. The police and 118 operators intervened on the spot, but there was nothing that could be done for the young man. The Agrigento Public Prosecutor’s Office has started investigations into the dynamics of the accident.
In Messina, in the hours following the tragedy, numerous messages of condolence arrived. Among these that of the mayor Federico Basile, who expressed the closeness of the municipal administration and the entire city to the Blandina family. The President of the Region Renato Schifani also remembered the young victim, together with the other people who died in the accidents that occurred in those days in Sicily.
Tomorrow the Cathedral of Messina will therefore welcome family, friends and those who want to accompany Egidio on his last journey.
