Domenico Giannetta - Roberto Vannacci - Domenico Furgiuele

Immigration, fight against crime, electoral law, a “different” right that is “perched” on values, ideals, “which cannot be negotiable”. It is a full-scale Vannacci who arrives in Siderno, in the Reggio area, to support the Futuro Nazionale candidate in the Reggio Calabria by-elections, Domenico Giannetta, the first electoral test for the party.

«We aim to do better than the AfD in Saxony»

On the ground the general sounds the charge. «We aim to do better than the AfD in Saxony, more than 43%, we do not set limits to providence», says Vannacci, raising the bar in view of the electoral competition on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 September. «We are here to win, to restore dignity to this land which deserves a candidate from Reggio, who in Montecitorio represents the demands, the needs, the requirements of the people of Reggio. A candidate who, when he is free from Montecitorio’s commitments, will not go to Milan but will return to his countrymen”, underlined Vannacci, underlining Giannetta’s territorial affiliation, a clear attack on the candidacy of Forzista Fabio Roscioli for the centre-right.

«Melons or Tajani? I’m not throwing anyone off the tower.”

But beyond the trumpet blasts Vannacci, on a national level, always keeps the door open. «Melons or Tajani? I’m not throwing anyone down from the tower”, he replies to a specific question, because “we don’t challenge anyone”, he says with a less belligerent tone, but rather “we carry forward our demands for a different right, which is entrenched in the traditional principles, values and ideals of the right”. And it is precisely this point that the general underlines, that of the “values that cannot be negotiated”, well listed in the National Future program, around which to seek a synthesis and convergence with “anyone who recognizes themselves in these principles”.

Tajani’s closure

However, Vannacci’s openings do not seem to correspond to a similar predisposition from Forza Italia, a moderate soul of the centre-right and ideologically more distant from FnV. “I am a person of choice, I don’t change five colors like some gentlemen do,” said the national secretary of Forza Italia, Antonio Tajani, during the young Azzurri event in Montesilvano, answering a question on the possibility of an alliance with Futuro Nazionale. «The one who has never erected walls and talked about incompatibility is me», observes Vannacci, recalling that he has always said that «if we converge on certain red lines, within the envelope of these red lines, I am available to talk, to discuss, to find a convergence».

A match that looks to the Politics of 2027

But the impression is that the by-elections have increasingly taken on the contours of a match between Forza Italia and Futuro Nazionale as part of a possible reconfiguration of the center-right and its internal balance, looking to the 2027 policies. A challenge that starts from the territory since the candidate supported by FnV, Domenico Giannetta, is the former group leader of Forza Italia in the Regional Council and that the Azzurri are the hegemonic party in Calabria. But, at the same time, a comparison that seems to go beyond the borders of Reggio Calabria, as it is the first electoral competition in which Futuro Nazionale participates with its own symbol and the first real test of resistance for the center-right against the center-left without the general’s contribution.
