More pensioners than workers. Messina the “land” of the elderly

No one can say with certainty that the island is not a country for young people, but certainly, to paraphrase the title of a well-known film, it is not a country of young people, so much so that, with the passage of time, between the birth rate decline, emigration, depopulation and increase in life expectancy, the balance between the number of pensions and that of those employed has reached minus 186,462 units. This is what emerges from the new survey by the CGIA of Mestre, which places Sicily in third place among the regions for negative balance, surpassed only by Calabria and Puglia, while on a national scale, in 2025, there will be 24.1 million salaries and pay slips against 23.2 million pension checks, with a ratio now of 1 to 1, very far from the 3 to 1 recorded in the 1980s.
In short, if it is true that in Italy the future belongs to the elderly, the paradox is even more valid on this side of the Strait, where the “imbalance” in question becomes very evident in the province of Messina, with a balance of -76,936 units, the fourth most marked difference in the country, not far from that found in Palermo, sixth with -63,638.
