334 prisoners for 263 available places and 129 prison police operators compared to a requirement of at least 248 units. This is the picture reported by Gennarino De Fazio, head of the Uil FP Penitentiary Police, after the inspection carried out this morning in the Rossano prison.
The visit was attended by the general secretary of the Uil Public Function Calabria, Walter Bloise, the regional secretary of the Uil FP Penitentiary Police, Salvatore Paradiso, and other regional and territorial managers of the union.
According to the data reported by De Fazio, the inmates present are 27% more than the capacity, while the operators on duty are 48% less than the requirement quantified by the Department of Penitentiary Administration.
The alarm launched by Uil
«The eloquence of the numbers does not require particular illustrations to describe the gravity of the operational and management situation», states De Fazio. «27% more prisoners and, above all, 48% fewer operators certify the serious emergency in existence».
A situation which, according to the trade unionist, heavily affects the levels of security, the conditions of detention and the quality of the services offered to users, as well as having repercussions on the workload of the agents “exceeding every acceptable limit”.
Furthermore, De Fazio reports, the staff is also burdened by “the contraction of irrepressible rights, such as annual holidays and weekly rest periods”.
