Iran’s truce proposal was returned to the sender: US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s plan which envisaged reopening the Strait of Hormuz within a week, without however completely closing the door to negotiations. “They want an agreement to immediately reopen the Strait because they are suffering very heavy losses,” he explained to journalists. To then concede immediately afterwards, «they want an agreement and that’s fine with me. I also like to make deals.”
According to a US source relaunched by Axios, the head of the White House acted in this way because he believes that Tehran does not really control the Strait, but the communication channels between the two capitals are not closed. “Positive and constructive” discussions are still ongoing between the United States and Iran through mediators, including on nuclear issues, after indirect negotiations in recent days, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, between Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The Iranian plan: seven days to reopen Hormuz
The latter explained that the conditions of the proposal are the same as those established in the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States a few months ago, which required the cessation of all hostilities, including those on the Lebanese front, the release of frozen Iranian funds, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil and the end of the American naval blockade. On the seventh day of the truce, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz.
“If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and normal maritime transit restored within seven days,” confirmed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in an interview with CBS. «The choice now lies with the United States. Iran does not accept coercion, threats or intimidation and will not give up its sovereign rights under pressure.”
The proposal – underlined the Iranian head of state – was developed “in coordination” with the supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei. “Iran has not abandoned the negotiating table” and mediation by Qatar and Pakistan continues but “after the attacks and sanctions, we no longer have trust in Washington”, he added.

Trump’s response was not long in coming: “I reject their proposal,” he said. And on Truth he also published a map of the Strait of Hormuz, with the strait circled and the words “Trump Strait”.
According to the Wall Street Journalthe head of the White House is skeptical that Tehran will agree to meet his demands related to its nuclear program and has told his staff that he expects to resume bombing the Islamic Republic after the midterm elections in November. However, not large-scale military operations, also due to Washington’s desire to preserve ammunition supplies – which are running out – for other possible conflicts.
