The ceremony for the formal delivery of the provision of the President of the Republic with which the honorary title of “City” was conferred on the Municipality of Borgia was held at the Prefecture of Catanzaro, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Interior Hon. Wanda Ferro and the Prefect of Catanzaro Clemente Di Nuzzo, pursuant to Article 18 of the Consolidated Law on Local Authorities.

The Mayor of Borgia Elisabeth Sacco, the Municipal Council and the Municipal Council took part in the ceremony, together with the Police Commissioner Giuseppe Linares and the other provincial leaders of the Police Force.

The process and reasons for recognition

The prestigious recognition comes at the conclusion of the process started by the municipal administration and followed by the Prefecture of Catanzaro. Upon proposal of the Minister of the Interior and after consulting the competent Commission, the President of the Republic, with decree of 30 April 2026, conferred the title of City on Borgia.

At the basis of the provision is, first of all, the extraordinary historical and archaeological importance of the Borgo area, which houses testimonies of exceptional value referable to the ancient Skylletion and the subsequent Roman colony of Scolacium, today valorised in the National Archaeological Museum and Park of Scolacium, in the municipal territory.

This heritage is accompanied by the particular urban planning story of Borgia, profoundly affected by the earthquake of 1783, following which the inhabited center was rebuilt on a new site according to an organic and rational system, the conformation of which is still clearly legible today.

The awarding of the title enhances, more generally, the historical, cultural, architectural and identity heritage of the Borgo community and the territory’s ability to preserve testimonies that document its role through different eras, from antiquity to the contemporary age.

The recognition therefore takes on a significant value, not only formally, but also in terms of identity, as proof of the path taken by the community and the role that Borgia has been able to maintain and consolidate in the provincial and regional context.

Institutional interventions

The Undersecretary of State Hon. Wanda Ferro, after thanking the Prefect Di Nuzzo and his predecessor, Castrese De Rosa, highlighted how «the awarding of the title of City constitutes a prestigious recognition, which honors the history, cultural heritage and vitality of the community of Borgia. It is a result that strengthens the identity and institutional authority of the Municipality, increasing its ability to represent its territory also in the various institutional forums and offering new opportunities to promote its excellence and support its development prospects. In this context, the Scolacium archaeological park represents an asset of extraordinary value, capable of telling the millenary history of the territory and of attracting visitors and new opportunities. A place that over the years has also been able to open up to the languages of contemporary culture, starting from the “Intersezioni” experience, launched during the years of my presidency of the Province, up to the initiatives that today continue to enhance its extraordinary potential. Borgia, due to its position between the hill and the sea and its close proximity to Catanzaro, occupies a central position in the capital area and can play an increasingly important role in the integrated valorisation of its cultural, landscape and tourist riches”.

Prefect Clemente Di Nuzzo also expressed his warm appreciation for the positive outcome of the procedure, underlining how “the awarding of the title of City represents recognition of the history, beauty and identity of Borgia and, at the same time, an opportunity to further strengthen the valorization of its specificities”.

Applause for the municipal administration

During the ceremony, applause was given to the Mayor, the Council and the entire municipal council for the path undertaken and for the positive conclusion of the process, with the hope that the prestigious recognition can constitute a further impulse towards the valorisation of local peculiarities and the growth prospects of the community.
