Vincenzo Cretella, historic figure of Cosenza socialism, has died at the age of 104., historic figure of Cosenza socialism. Mayor Franz Caruso expressed deep condolences for the passing.

“With Vincenzo Cretella – underlined Franz Caruso in his message of condolence – a great socialist who never betrayed his ideals disappears. His militancy was convinced and passionate and deeply rooted in the key principles of the reformist political tradition. In learning the sad news of Vincenzo Cretella’s passing, it couldn’t help but come to mind – added Franz Caruso – that splendid day spent in his home, in November 2021 – I was as soon as I took office as Mayor – when, together with other socialists from Cosenza, we paid him a visit to celebrate his hundredth birthday, one of the first visits of my mandate and on that occasion I presented him with a plaque from the city of Cosenza. With me there were also the late Pino Iacino, mayor of Cosenza between 1975 and 1980, the municipal councilor Mimmo Frammartino who was somewhat of the architect of the meeting. D’Ambrosio”.

“On that occasion – continued Franz Caruso – his fervent intelligence, which remained intact despite the passage of time, not only revealed a notable charge of vitality, but Vincenzo, expressing profound joy for our presence, began to tell a long series of anecdotes, also tracing a brief history of socialism in Calabria. Vincenzo Cretella was born in 1921, when the Livorno split between the souls of the left took place, and he interpreted – he further stated Franz Caruso in his message of condolence – socialist belonging as an almost fideistic passion. He was one of the historic members of the “Pietro Mancini” section. He has always been a socialist and a socialist like his father, his political passion has made proselytes and has also been passed on to his children, continuers of that tradition. Mayor Franz Caruso also recalled Vincenzo Cretella’s past as a primary school teacher of the so-called old guard of teachers. “During his activity, which took place for many years in the schools of Carolei, he contributed – remarked Franz Caruso – to the education of many young people for whom he was an important guide, directing their life paths in the best possible way”.

Finally, the Mayor expressed his personal closeness and that of the entire Administration of Palazzo dei Bruzi to Vincenzo Cretella’s family.
