Fuel is a deep scratch on the side of the Calabrian economy. Confartigianato has turned the spotlight on the current crisis scenario. Businesses and families find themselves at the crossroads of two bottlenecks. A geographic one, which passes through Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, hubs that are only distant on paper but decisive for the cost of energy and transport. The other economic, marked by the high cost of money and the increasingly narrow margins of a state budget which, by the end of the year, will be called upon to maintain the path of recovery. Uncertainty opens up within these two bottlenecks.
The climate of difficulty is filling the squares and streets of the region. Tractors, trucks, fishing boats: diesel and petrol have become the acute point of the international crisis that is making its way into the budgets of those who work in this land. The protest by farmers and hauliers has already spread and the Calabrian and Sicilian navies have announced the blockade of the Strait for 22 October, with around one hundred fishing boats expected to mobilise.
The Region responded by putting 15 million euros on the table. The provision, intended for businesses through one-off contributions, entrusts the Council with the definition of the Ateco codes, the ceilings and the access criteria. They are important resources, but not decisive, as Confagricoltura also recognized. If, to give a purely theoretical measure of the allocation, we were to compare the 15 million to the total of 180,532 companies and agricultural workers considered, we would arrive at just over 83 euros per person.
