And now there is a date. Although it is not the first time one has been proposed. And so far they have all failed. This time it was the president of the M5s, Giuseppe Conte, who threw it on the table. For the centre-left, the approval of the electoral law has effectively made the primary route mandatory. «First of all we must focus on the program – said Conte – We completed our journey on 20 September. On the 18th Avs will present its program. Schlein held a meeting with the Democratic Party on the same days. At this point, a moment later, but truly a moment later, let’s meet again.” At that table, he admitted, «we have many things to discuss» but, once we have found the square «a moment later, with a shared program, we will go to the primaries, which we cannot do so close to an electoral campaign. We cannot wait for the Constitutional Court to rule on the electoral law. In truth, in the Democratic Party there is less rush: the vote is almost 9 months away – the reasoning goes – there is time to do everything properly. In the broad field, a dispute is also taking place over who was the one who closed the door on the possibility of a step backwards by PD secretary Elly Schlein and M5s president Giuseppe Conte to avoid the primaries and nominate a third figure to lead the country.

A debate which, as soon as it was born, hit a dead end. Because the hypothesis that someone else represents the coalition has never had too much of an impact on the two leaders. «We know that it is written in the PD Statute that the secretary aspires to and can be indicated as a candidate for prime minister. Schlein legitimately wants to be a candidate for prime minister” said Conte. Remembering, however, that “recently, in a meeting that was supposed to remain confidential with Schlein and which then went to the newspapers, certainly not through my responsibility, I proposed: Let’s take a step back, if you are willing to take a step back we both do it”, but “this willingness of mine was not accepted”. For the other part of the wide field it was a day of clarifications. The three-way lunch in the Chamber between Conte and Avs leaders Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni left some consequences. So much so that in the morning, on the Transatlantic, Schlein, together with the Organization manager of the Democratic Party Igor Taruffi, stopped to talk at length first with Fratoianni and then with Bonelli.

Avs has always been against primaries

Avs has always been against the primaries, which the M5s is pushing for and for which the secretary has said she is ready. «I also clarified with Elly Schlein – explained Bonelli – The position of Avs is not against the secretary of the Democratic Party, for whom I renew my esteem and obviously true sympathy, but it is of deep concern for the fact that in my opinion the primaries do not help to unite, because they amplify the differences. After that, I cannot determine the decisions of an entire alliance.” The other theme is that of the program table. Bonelli expects longer times than Conte. «When the central area is defined – he explained – we can start and close the programmatic pact. We have never vetoed anyone except, obviously, programmatic issues which are fundamental.” But in the wide field the air is still heavy. As can be seen from the attention with which the observers kept an eye on the Pd troops when Conte spoke in the Chamber against the electoral law and then on the M5s troops when it was Schlein’s turn. Final report: everyone supported their leader and that was it. But Conte cut it short: “I listened to and applauded Schlein.”
