«On Thursday morning, the table for public order and security was convened in Cosenza, in the Prefecture. On that occasion I will ask for greater attention for Cassano and, above all, I will make municipally owned premises available to the State for the establishment of further facilities in our territory, such as a police station or a group of forestry carabinieri”. Thus the mayor of Cassano allo Ionio, Gianpaolo Iacobini, opening the proceedings of the public assembly ‘Hands off the city’. An assembly convened and strongly supported by the mayor of Cassano and by the bishop and vice-president of the CEI, Monsignor Francesco Savino, which took place in a packed municipal theater with the participation, among others, of Don Ennio Stamile and Don Marcello Cozzi, of the regional councilors Rossellina Madeo and Ferdinando Laghi, of some mayors of the province, including that of Cosenza, of Corigliano Rossano, of San Fili, of Amantea, of Amendolara, as well as representatives of institutions, law enforcement agencies, associations, the sporting world and schools. Many young people and citizens were present. Mayor Iacobini opened the proceedings: «This is not the time for those who take refuge in resignation and silence, we have the duty to bear witness to this as representatives of the institutions and we will make some noise so that this is clear first and foremost to ourselves, even before those who are further away from these places». Monsignor Savino intervened immediately afterwards, reminding everyone of their responsibilities: «I allow myself to say that this is the time to react, this is the time for courage. I would dare even more to say that this is the hour of responsibility, of co-responsibility. This is the hour in which we must say which side we are on, because at this moment every neutral attitude says complicity and says continuity to those who use this territory, rather than putting themselves at the service of this territory”.
