Giuseppe Conte wastes no time and, in the aftermath of the agreement signed in the broad field, makes clear the stakes on IV and the “non-negotiable” points of the M5s on Ukraine. A manifesto of clarity for the five-star voters, but also, according to some observers, a first challenge thrown at her main rival, Elly Schlein, in view of the primaries. «We will present ourselves at the tables for the program with 20 points (among which there is also the citizen’s income) which summarize perhaps the most advanced progressive project – call it left-wing – for changing society» existing today.

The Renzi knot

Regarding the presence of Matteo Renzi, there are no vetoes of a personal nature – warns the former prime minister addressing the secretary of the Democratic Party – but precise “political guarantees” are needed otherwise the Movement will not support it. Necessary protections, explains Conte, to defend ourselves from those who could “send us into disarray”: “Dear Schlein, if you were to win the primaries we must say so first.” «Renzi’s problem» is that «he does business around the world» and «if a serious law on conflict of interest is not placed at the center of the progressive project», again, «we won’t be there».

Renzi, for his part, looks at the substance: «The season of vetoes is over», «we will be happy to give our contribution». But the response to the leader of the M5s comes from the party: “We need to be united to send Meloni home, Conte’s controversy is becoming tiresome.”

The distances over Ukraine

Then, there is the age-old Ukraine issue: the Democratic reformists are once again raising the bar: «If we are called to the government, we should contribute to military aid to Ukraine in a more substantial way than the Meloni government did», claims the former head of the Defense Lorenzo Guerini. The president of the Movement has a completely different opinion: «Up to now it has been a failed path», Italy is «the leader in the EU to represent the negotiating line. It was madness not to reassure Russia that, in the future, Ukraine would be out of NATO.”

«The dynamic yellow-green duo always comes out in sync on Ukraine…», dem senator Filippo Sensi stings, referring to Conte’s words and those of Salvini who reiterated his No «to weapons in Kiev» promising to reiterate it also in the Chamber «when there is a parliamentary debate».

Program by November, then the rules for the gazebos

The discussion on the program between the Sherpas will be thematic (by tables) and should begin as early as next week, perhaps on Tuesday, to conclude by the end of November. Once the programmatic obstacle has been overcome, it will be time to develop the rules for the gazebos at the beginning of the year. And here too the points of view are different: given – as Conte points out – that the primaries will be open to more than two candidates, in the Democratic Party we look favorably on a double-round competition, a solution which, however, does not convince the Five Star Movement. Again: the M5s would like to open up online voting, also extended to 16 year olds, but the Dems are asking for precise guarantees. The refrain, for now, is to face the obstacles one at a time and arrive more united than ever at the big street demonstration in December. Which perhaps will be held in Rome on Saturday 5th.

The optimism of the Nazarene

Optimism for yesterday’s “turning point” transpires from the Nazarene, even more so after Pagnoncelli’s latest poll which places the centre-left above the centre-right (without Vannacci), capable of obtaining the majority prize. And Elly Schlein throws down the gauntlet: the Democratic Party today is more competitive than ever because it has given itself a “clear progressive profile”, despite “a part of the establishment does not want the left in government” and despite “my personal aggravating circumstances: I am a free woman, I am forty years old and I do not conform to all standards…”.

Even the Green Angelo Bonelli speaks with satisfaction of a «new climate» and explains: «What Avs will do in the primaries will be decided together by Fratoianni and I together with the leading groups of the Verdi and Sinistra Italiana. We will decide together how to tackle this step.” The puzzle remains of what the centrists will do: single list and unitary candidate as Riccardo Magi and Ernesto Maria Ruffini would like, or each on their own?
