Over 300 attendees and a discussion that expanded from Calabria to the national challenges of regionalism. Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of the Province of Cosenza packed for the presentation of Mimmo Bevacqua’s volume, “Notes on ten years in institutions. Questions and reflections on regionalism, autonomy and territories”, published by Rubbettino.

The ten-year experience of the former regional councilor and group leader of the Democratic Party was the starting point for discussing the relationship between the State and the Regions, administrative decentralization and the prospects of local communities. What holds the various interventions together is the need to guarantee services and opportunities to citizens regardless of where they live.

Autonomy and internal areas, the open questions

The debate addressed the transformations of the State and the challenges of differentiated autonomy, focusing on the depopulation of internal areas and the conditions necessary to offer development prospects to the territories.

Representatives of the Democratic Party from four regions contributed to the discussion: Paolo Calvano, group leader in the Emilia-Romagna Regional Council, connected remotely; Carlo Borghetti, regional councilor of Lombardy; Emanuela Droghei, regional councilor of Lazio, with a video contribution; and Rosellina Madeo, regional councilor of Calabria. Nicola Irto, senator and regional secretary of the Calabria Democratic Party, and Marina Sereni, national health and health manager of the party, also spoke.

The contents of the volume and the political perspectives of the path narrated by the author were then explored in depth in the interview conducted by the journalist Francesco Mannarino.

Among those present were the mayor of Cosenza Franz Caruso, the regional councilors Ernesto Alecci, Giuseppe Falcomatà and Francesco De Cicco, together with the former councilors Mammoliti and Tassone. Also in the room were mayors, provincial administrators, institutional representatives, activists and sympathizers of the centre-left.

«Putting Calabria and the Calabrians at the center»

Bevacqua expressed satisfaction with the participation and the topics addressed: «It was an extraordinary evening, not so much for the presentation of the book, but for the opportunity to animate a debate on topics that I consider vital and fundamental for the future of Calabria and for the stability of the entire country».

The author then recalled the objective of the work and the initiative: «My intent was and remains to put Calabria and the Calabrians at the center, their rights, their opportunities and the need to build a fairer future, without leaving anyone behind. We need to start again from here for the future of this region and our territories.”
