One of the reasons why it is better to read a book in bed than scroll through social media is that, no matter how “brick” it may be, a book is unlikely to break your nose. The same cannot be said about the smartphone and a 24-year-old Russian girl who was hospitalized in Vidnovskaya hospital with her nasal septum literally crumbled from the impact with the phone knows something about it.
And it didn’t happen because someone threw it in her face, but because she fell asleep while scrolling through her social media feed, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Health. After the smartphone slipped from her hand and fell on the bridge of her nose, the diagnostics showed a fracture of the nasal bones with displacement of the fragments.
“Under local anesthesia, we surgically reduced the displaced fragments of the nasal skeleton and fixed them in the correct position. Ten days after the injury, an excellent aesthetic result was noted. The organ functions normally,” said otolaryngologist Raoul Ten who noted that in case of such injuries, urgent medical attention is needed to avoid fusion of the bone fragments in the wrong position. If time is lost, the correction will be difficult and traumatic from the hospital and has returned to normal life. She assured that she will no longer use her smartphone in bed.
