An area of about 2,200 (two thousand two hundred) square meters was seized by the military of Environmental Police Operational Unit from the Port Authority – Coast Guard of Crotone in Fosso, a hamlet of Le castella of the Municipality of Capo Rizzuto Island.
During the activities aimed at the prevention and contrast of environmental offenses, the soldiers of the Port Authority – Coast Guard They identified a fenced area with a masonry and driveway access, inside which there were numerous boats, cords and mechanical means used for their handling.
The inspection made it possible to ascertain the presence of an industrial shed of about 210 square meters, used as a mechanical and deposit workshop, with an external area paved and partially covered by canopies. The activities carried out were attributable to maintenance and storage of boats, painting, interventions on marine engines and installation of spare parts.
The checks revealed that the industrial waste water produced were downloaded directly in a nearby rainwater collection channel, without any treatment or collection system, neither for rainwater nor for those deriving from washing.
Furthermore, it was found that the land had a different urban destination, which would not allow the performance of commercial activities such as the one in question. The entire activity was free of authorization for the unloading of industrial waste, the emissions into the atmosphere and the acoustic impact assessment. The construction works were also without building permit.
During the inspection several cubic meters of waste were found, including carcasses of boats, ferrous materials, exhausted marine engines, tanks and drums for oils, all stored in the absence of the expected registers and form for waste management.
In the face of the serious ascertained violations, the entire area was seized at the disposal of theJudicial authority. The owner of the land and the owner of the commercial activity have been referred for various hypotheses of an environmental and building offense.
