«What was supposed to be a spotlight for Agrigento and Sicily risks turning into a harakiri, since the ‘Italian capital of culture’ is talked about almost exclusively in a negative way between inadequate structures, flop press conferences and road signs full of blunders.” This was said by Michele Catanzaro, leader of the Democratic Party at the Ars, the first signatory, together with the other Dem deputies, of a question on «Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025». In the question, addressed to the President of the Region Renato Schifani, the Regional Councilor for Tourism Elvira Amata and the Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity Francesco Scarpinato, he asks to know «why a cabin was not set up of direction” and the regional government is urged to “urgently implement coordination and control actions on the management activities of Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025, in order to stem possible inconveniences and protect the image of the area concerned”.

Mazzarino is running for 2027

Mazzarino, around 11 thousand in the province of Caltanissetta, will be the only Sicilian city among the 17 candidates for Italian Capital of Culture 2027. The official presentation of the project took place in the Piersanti Mattarella room of Palazzo dei Normanni by the mayor Mimmo Faraci, the director of the Roberto Grossi project. On January 31st it will be known whether the town will enter the final phase for the designation which will take place by March 28th.

«Being among the 17 candidate cities is already a victory for me – says Mayor Faraci -. A project that is close to our hearts and which has its roots in the history and culture of this entire part of the territory. Mazarin boasts three archaeological areas, two castles, a basilica, 17 churches, two libraries and numerous religious festivals. The dossier we presented, entitled “Mazaris, wheat and plural identities”, is a new vision of development and historical interpretation of the entire territory”.

Entrepreneurs, local administrators, artists and young people shared the strategic vision of the project. There are two macro-themes around which all the projects are developed: interculturality and wheat. There is the video game set in Mazzarino worthy of the 70s and 80s, «Platform for change», dedicated to teenagers, BaRock to bring rock to Baroque places, the Between Festival which also involves Aidone, Pietraperzia and Piazza Armerina. The Bluebeard Fest, between theatre, music and storytelling; «Monastery 2.0» to transform these places from abandoned to a hotbed of creativity, artistic production and meeting between young people in the Mediterranean; the Simpa museum circuit, the widespread theater and the one dedicated to Land art entitled «Third Paradise».
