The first day of October 2025 began with an exciting moment of environmental protection in the waters in front of the coast of Vibo Valentia, where the Guardia di Finanza released the specimen of Turtle Marina Caretta-Caretta nicknamed “Ariel”, after a period of essential care. The animal, an adult and vulnerable female, had been recovered in an evident state of difficulty last June off Briatico (VV), thanks to the timely intervention of a naval unit of the Aironavale Operational Department (Roan) of Vibo Valentia. At the time of recovery, the turtle presented the amputated front fins and wounds from choker due to the ingestion of plastic debris. Entrusted to the care of the sea recovery center Turtles and marine animals of Montepaone (CZ), “Ariel” was subjected to a delicate surgery that brought it to the complete recovery of vital functions. The release, with the logistical support of the vehicles of the Vibo Valentia naval station, aboard which the staff of the Mare Calabria Ets Association was present, the veterinarians of the Provincial Health Authority of Vibo Valentia and Legambiente staff, took place in the same waters, a natural habitat, which had seen it in difficulty. The event underlines the constant commitment of the body for the protection of marine biodiversity and the fight against pollution. The financiers of the Roan of Vibo Valentia continue to be at the forefront, not only in the contrast to illegal trafficking, but also in the protection of protected fauna, reiterating the importance of synergy between institutions and specialized centers for the protection of the fragile marine ecosystem.
