An important milestone for Calabrian healthcare was reached with employment at the “Renato Dulbecco” Hospital-University of Catanzaro of the new Digital Pet-TC hybrid systemone of the most advanced equipment currently available in the medical field on the National Internritorio. The news is the regional councilor Antonello Talerico (who had repeatedly dealt with the need to implement radiodiagnostics), underlined the importance of the installation of the first digital pet-tc with entirely digital technology in Calabria.

“The new equipment – explains Talerico – represents a qualitative leap in the diagnostic images, thanks to its greater efficiency in the detection and reconstruction of the images, allowing the identification of lesions even of a few millimeters. All with contained doses of radiation and in times of reduced acquisition.”

Unlike other tools used occasionally or on the move, the new Pet-TC will be operational continuously for five days a week, allowing a substantial increase in the number of exams that can be performed. “For the moment you can perform about n. 150 pet per month, but from September 2025 we could reach about n. 180 pet monthly. This means – continues Talerico – a significant reduction in waiting lists and a brake on the many ‘journeys of hope’ towards other regions”.

In addition to the standard exams with FDG tracing, the new system will also allow the execution of advanced investigations such as PET with PSMA, fundamental for the diagnosis of prostate cancer, and the pet with amyloid tracing tracing, used in the neurological field to identify neurodegenerative diseases. These, increasingly requested exams, which have often been carried out in extra-regional structures.

“With this equipment – concludes Talerico – the offer of our hospital is expanded and the potential of nuclear medicine are fully expressed, both from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view. It is a concrete result for our health system and a signal of hope for Calabrian citizens who have too often been forced to seek care outside the region.” Now – concludes Talerico – we must break down the other waiting lists for the oncological patients and serious diseases and start a true season of prevention.
