Cyclone Harry has arrived in Calabria and the weather conditions are destined to get even worse with the red and orange alert issued by the regional Civil Protection. Which is why schools will be closed today too. Below is the list of municipalities that have, through a specific ordinance, decided to close schools and parks:

Schools closed in Catanzaro also on Wednesday

The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, has issued a contingent and urgent ordinance following the red level weather alert issued by the Regional Civil Protection, in order to protect public safety and reduce risks for the population.

From today and until the entire day of Wednesday 21 January 2026, the following measures are in place in the municipal area:

– the closure of schools and educational institutions of all levels, both state and private, including public and private educational services for children and nursery schools, public and private nursery schools and playrooms, with the suspension of all scholastic and extra-scholastic activities;

– the closure of public and private sports facilities, with suspension of competitive and non-competitive activities;

– the cancellation of the weekly markets in the Santa Maria and Materdomini districts;

– the closure of the municipal library, cinemas and theatres, public and private;

– the closure of parks, public gardens and cemeteries and the ban on access to the river areas, the pine forests, the breakwaters, the beach and the pedestrian part and the cycle path of the seafront, for the entire extension from the Corace bank up to and including the Giovino stretch.

Please remember that for the same reasons, the Lido municipal delegation will be closed for Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st January 2026.

As already communicated, we remind you of the imminent closure of access and parking of cars on the seafront.
The municipal administration invites citizens to be extremely cautious, to limit travel to what is strictly necessary and to constantly follow the official updates disseminated through the institutional channels of the municipality and the Civil Protection.

The situation in Reggio where a red alert is expected

The red level weather alert is triggered in the municipal area of ​​Reggio Calabria. Following the warning message issued by the Regional Operations Room of the Civil Protection, which predicts possible intense rainfall until midnight on Tuesday 20 January, the municipal administration has ordered the activation of the Municipal Operations Center (COC) and has invited citizens to be extremely cautious.

The Municipality recommends limiting travel to what is strictly necessary and scrupulously following the instructions of the Civil Protection. In particular, we invite you to avoid underpasses, not to stop near steep slopes subject to mud flows or possible collapses of rock blocks and to abandon the basement or underground floors located in depressed areas or near rivers and streams, reaching, if necessary, the upper floors of the buildings.

The situation will be constantly monitored by the municipal Civil Protection service and the Local Police, ready to intervene if necessary.

In consideration of the adverse weather forecasts, with Union Ordinance n. 7 of 19 January 2026, the closure was also ordered, for tomorrow 20 January 2026, of all schools of all levels in the municipal area, including school gyms, as well as Early Childhood Educational Services, including nursery schools.

Further measures were adopted by the Environment Sector with a Management Ordinance of 19 January 2026, which provides for the closure, until the emergency is over, of all public parks equipped with fences and gates, for reasons of public safety. In particular, the Villa Comunale “Umberto I”, the Park “Federica Cacozza” (formerly Parco Botteghelle, in viale Calabria) and the Parco delle Vittorie, located in via delle Vittorie, will remain closed.

The municipal administration renews its invitation to citizens to exercise maximum prudence and collaboration, recommending compliance with the provisions adopted for the protection of public safety.

In Vibo parks, public gardens and schools are closed

Due to the expected worsening of weather conditions and on the basis of the bulletin released by the regional Civil Protection which establishes the orange alert for Tuesday 20 January 2026, Mayor Enzo Romeo has signed two ordinances to protect public safety. With the first provision, villas, parks and public gardens were ordered to be closed from today’s afternoon, Monday 19 January, in order to prevent risk situations due to strong winds and possible heavy rainfall. With the second ordinance, however, all schools of all levels in the municipal area are ordered to be closed for tomorrow, Tuesday 20 January 2026. The mayor invites citizens to limit travel to what is strictly necessary, to pay maximum attention and to follow official updates through the communication channels of the Municipality and the Civil Protection.

In Locri schools were also closed on Wednesday 21st

The Municipal Administration of Locri has arranged, with Union Ordinance n. 1/2026, the activation of the Municipal Operations Center (COC) and invites citizens to exercise maximum caution, following the recommendations released by the Civil Protection. Schools closed tomorrow Tuesday 20th January and Wednesday 21st.

In particular it is recommended to:

do not travel unless strictly necessary;

avoid underpasses;

abandon basement or basement floors if located in depressed areas or near rivers, buried streams or with riverbed sections restricted due to anthropic causes;

avoid access to green areas.

Furthermore, with Union Ordinance no. 2/2026, it was ordered:

the closure of the seafront and coastal areas of the city until midnight on 21 January 2026;

the inhibition of access to the city waterfront, including parking, transit and carrying out activities in the exposed coastal areas, with the exception of the resident population;

the ban on access to and permanence in parks, gardens and green areas present in the municipal territory, as well as the use of any equipment or system within them;

the ban on parking along public areas that border all city waterways (rivers, streams, canals) and near the bridges facing them, with the obligation to immediately remove unauthorized persons;

the ban on parking under trees in parks, gardens and green areas of the municipal territory.

The situation in Crotone and its province

Extraordinary security measures have been adopted in several municipalities in the Crotone area in consideration of the orange alert issued by the regional Civil Protection for today and tomorrow while the alarm for tomorrow has been raised to the highest level on the Ionian coast of Catanzaro and throughout Reggino. Measures that mainly concern coastal areas, in anticipation of the strong storms expected for tomorrow. In Crotone, during the urgent meeting of the municipal civil protection operations centre, chaired by the mayor Vincenzo Voce, the expected critical issues were taken stock. The mayor then issued an ordinance imposing numerous restrictions such as the suspension of educational activities for tomorrow too, similarly to all the other municipalities in the province, the total closure of all sports facilities, the municipal villa, public gardens and parks and city cemeteries. In particular, a ban on parking and stopping and the closure of numerous roads along the sea to vehicular and pedestrian traffic have been established. The same measure was adopted by the mayors of Torretta di Crucoli and Cirò Marina. In the inland municipalities several storms hit in the morning, the meteorological station recorded over 150 millimeters of rain between the municipalities of Santa Severina, Mesoraca and Petilia Policastro. Given the weather warning issued by the Civil Protection Operations Room, the Extraordinary Commissioner who leads the Municipality of Cutro has issued an Order for the evacuation of underground homes, basements and the ground floor of buildings located between the coast and state road 106 and in the Votapozzo area, asking for hospitality from relatives or friends. Anyone who has logistical problems should call the local police. The Ordinance is valid until midnight on January 20th.

Landslide in Cirò Marina

The heavy rainfall that is occurring in these hours led to a landslide on Provincial Road 7 on the afternoon of Monday 19th, around 5pm, which required the immediate intervention of the Municipality. The road was cleared of debris and made passable again immediately. the mayor, Mario Sculco, made this known, reiterating his invitation to citizens to exercise maximum prudence. The municipal administration has activated all the planned protection measures. Even today (Tuesday 20th), in fact, schools of all levels will remain closed and the activities of the Office of the Justice of the Peace will be suspended. At the same time, the territory is placed under constant observation, with a Civil Protection garrison already operational from the early hours of the day.
