Over the last 24 hours, the Ionian area of the Messina area has been affected by intense rainfall, causing landslides and mudslides in the Forza d’Agrò area. Provincial roads 12 and 16 were particularly affected, invaded by mud and debris: vehicular transit, although never having been completely interrupted, remained slowed down especially in the stretch of the hamlet of Scifì, where traffic became extremely treacherous.
The Metropolitan City of Messina promptly activated the reclamation procedures, employing teams of road workers and a specialized company to clear the roadways and restore safety conditions. The rescue operations could have been even quicker if the flooding of the railway underpass near the town of Sant’Alessio Siculo had not occurred.
«I have ordered the immediate activation of the intervention teams and the use of all available resources», declares the metropolitan mayor Federico Basile, «with the primary objective of protecting the safety of the communities involved and of restoring the full viability of the infrastructures affected by the meteorological events in the shortest possible time. I personally followed the operations in close collaboration with the head of the Jonica-Alcantara homogeneous area road maintenance service Gaetano Maggioloti”, adds the general director Giuseppe Campagna, “maintaining constant coordination with the intervention teams and the police forces on site. Our commitment does not end with the management of the emergency: we will continue with a structured consolidation plan, aimed at strengthening the resilience of local infrastructures and preventing future risks.”
